Deepings Swimming Club claimed fourth place in the first round of the Junior Fenland League last weekend after an industrious performance from the squad of 18 swimmers.

The competition, hosted by Boston Amateur Swimming Club, saw a relatively inexperienced team participate due to several missing regulars, which forced some swimmers to race in higher age groups. A number of swimmers were also competing for the first time.

Four Deepings swimmers won their races to take maximum points. Maya Sangiorgio doubled up in the 10/U 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly, Holly Roffe won the 11/U 50m butterfly and Ella Briault touched home first in the 12/U 50m backstroke.

All four were also in action in other races, often swimming against older girls. Holly came a creditable third in the 13/U 50m butterfly and then came back out to swim a new personal best in the 13/U 50m freestyle to finish fourth. She capped a fine evening with an excellent third place in the 13/U 100IM, setting another personal best.

Maya moved up two age groups to finish fourth in the 12/U 50m butterfly, taking almost a second of the time she set earlier in the evening, while Ella came fourth in the 11/U and 12/U 50m breaststroke.

A quartet of nine-year-olds - Aaron Sadler, Maddie Taylor, Joe Black and Georgia Hunter - made their debuts for the club and put in some strong performances.

Maddie had a busy evening, competing in four races, including one in the 10/U age group. She came fourth in the 50m freestyle, third in the 25m butterfly and fifth in the 10/U freestyle, but was unfortunately disqualified in the 50m backstroke.

Aaron achieved a hat-trick of second place finishes, in the 50m freestyle, 25m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

Joe Black came fourth in the 12/U 50m freestyle, but was DQ’d in the 9/U 50m breaststroke, while Georgia was fourth in the 9yrs 50m breaststroke and then moved up to the 10/U category, coming fifth.

Other notable performances came from Grace Edwards, who touched home in second place in the 11/U 50m backstroke, third in the 13/U 50m backstroke and fourth in the 11/U 50m freestyle, and Maddie Partridge (second in the 13/U 50m breaststroke and fourth in the 12/U 100IM).

Zoe Fisher, Deepings Swimming Club assistant coach, said: “I’m proud of the way all our swimmers competed against tough competition, especially those who had to swim in a higher age group. It was a great experience for our younger children and we look forward to round two next month.”

Fifteen clubs across the east participate in the Junior Fenland League. Each of the five rounds is divided into three meets of five teams, with the finals in October. The races are divided into 9yrs, 10/U, 11/U, 12/U and 13/U age groups with cut-off times for each event.
