Harry Cardell and Lauren Saunderson were named Deepings Swimming Club Captains for the 2021/22 season while Kendra Greenwood-Covell was presented with the Vine Coach’s Cup by head coach Lynn Chapman at the recent Club Championships.
New club captains Harry Cardell and Lauren Saunderson are keen to keep the club motivated and swimmers engaged during one of the most turbulent periods in its 45-year history.
Lauren, who spent a lot of time pre-Covid on poolside assisting the coaching staff with some of the younger swimmers, said: “I am very excited to become Club Captain and use my final year before university to share my experience of eight years at the club with all swimmers, especially younger swimmers, to support them both technically and mentally.
“The club has helped me in so many ways and I am very grateful to be given this opportunity to give something back, and also organise club events, such as the Christmas cracker, in the near future!”
Harry pledged to help rebuild the club after its home pool at Deepings Leisure Centre closed in the summer.
“Having been with Deepings Swimming club for eight years, it is an honour to be asked to be club captain,” he said. “I have progressed throughout my time from junior to regional swimmer, thanks in particular to the coaching of head coach Lynn and I would love to give something back to the club.
“After struggling through the Covid lockdown, and with the club losing its pool after 45 years, I want to help rebuild the club and encourage new members to join. I have made many friends through the club and had the opportunity to compete and travel around the country and would love to help the next generation of swimmers enjoy the same opportunities.”
The Vines Coach’s Cup is presented twice a year to recognise a swimmer’s achievements, dedication and work ethic. Kendra joins the likes of celebrated former Deepings’ national swimmers Alex Wray and Isabel Spinley in receiving the prestigious trophy.
Announcing the winner on the final day of the club champs, Lynn said: “Kendra has shown huge dedication to swimming over the past year. She has grown in confidence from a timid swimmer to someone who is now getting out of her comfort zone and racing a variety of events.
“Kendra is focused in training and listens to how she can improve. She has made a big improvement in a short space of time.”
