Deepings Swimming Club hosted its annual Rob Welbourn Open Meet at the start of October, welcoming competitors from Boston, Lincoln Trident, South Lincs and Sutton swimming clubs.

A huge squad of 71 Deepings swimmers took part, aged nine to 19, each seeking to achieve their own individual goals and targets. From personal bests (PBs) to county and midland qualifying times, every swimmer enjoyed a successful weekend.

This included a colossal haul of 123 medals, including 55 gold, 38 silver and 30 bronze, with 29 swimmers finishing in the top three.

Catching the eye with outstanding personal performances were Grace Edwards, Maya Sangiorgio, Lilly Tappern, Jessica O’Herlihy, Jake Jungmann and Tom Neal, who between them bagged 32 of the 55 golds.

At opposite ends of the age spectrum, 10-year-old Grace Edwards and 16-year-old Jake Jungmann won seven golds apiece.

Grace dominated the backstroke events, winning the 50m 100m and 200m races with some huge PBs, and added to her golden collection by touching home first in both the 100IM and 200IM, plus the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke. She capped an amazing weekend with a pair of silvers, in the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle, to win medals in every stroke and distance.

Jake was also peerless in the three backstroke events, sweeping the board with substantial winning margins. He showed his versatility with further victories in the 50m freestyle, 50m and 100m breaststroke, and 100IM, adding silver in the 50m and 100m butterfly.

Lilly Tappern, 12, and Jessica O’Herlihy, 13, shared 10 golds between them.

Lilly’s five came in the 50m and 100m butterfly, 100m breaststroke, 200m freestyle and 200IM, with a trio of silvers in the 100IM, 100m freestyle and 200m butterfly.

Jess won the 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100IM and 50m butterfly. She completed the medal set with silver in the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle, and bronze in the 200m backstroke.

Ten-year-old Maya Sangiorgio was in impressive form all weekend, scooping gold in the 50m and 200m freestyle, 100m and 200m butterfly (her first time competing in the latter), plus silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 200IM.

Meanwhile, Tom Neal, 19, put together the perfect series of races, with four wins out of four. Gold came in the 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m and 200m butterfly.

For the girls, other gold-medal performances came from Millie Herrick (100IM), Ella Gerrard (50m and 100m freestyle), Bethany Eagle-Brown (200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 100IM), Lorna McGill (50m and 200m breaststroke), Emma Wilde (100m breaststroke, 50m and 200m butterfly), Amy Tappern (100m and 200m backstroke, 200IM) and Hannah Matthews (50m and 100m freestyle).

Also touching home first for the boys were Christian Rollinson (50m and 200m butterfly), Bailey Jackson (100IM), Ed Trofimovas (who achieved the breaststroke hat-trick with wins in the 50m, 100m and 200m) and Tom Adams (50m butterfly).

Deepings head coach Lynn Chapman was delighted with the performances over the weekend.

“We had a big squad at Rob Welbourn this year, with swimmers in all age groups, and it was great to see everyone focusing on their skills and benefiting from their hard training, from the youngest to the oldest,” she said.

“It’s only our second competition back after the summer break so to come away with so many medals, county/midland times and personal bests is a fantastic result. Everyone should be proud of their achievements.”

Over the same weekend, four members of Deepings Swimming Club were selected to represent the green of Lincolnshire at the Swim England National County Team Championships.

After competing the previous day at Rob Welbourn, Tom Adams, Bethany Eagle-Brown and Holly Leggott joined up with Louis Metselaar on the Sunday at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

The quartet put in some strong performances for Lincolnshire, which was competing in Division 2 against 16 other counties.

Bethany finished eighth in the 100m freestyle, Holly was 14th in the 100m backstroke, Louis was ninth in the 100m breaststroke and Tom, chosen as boys’ team captain, was 17th in the 100m butterfly.

The four also raced in the 200IM medley teams; the boys came 15th and the girls 17th. Lincolnshire finished 13th overall.
