The 2018/19 swimming season got underway in fine style last weekend with the junior inter-counties championships at the long-course 50-metre pool in Luton.

Three Deepings Swimming Club members, Alex Sadler, Lucia Karic and Emma Dennis, were selected to represent Lincolnshire, and each put in strong performances to help the county to fifth place out of eight.

Alex, swimming in his second inter-counties, competed in two individual events in the 11-year-old category and the mixed squadron relay. He finished an excellent third in the 50m butterfly and fifth in the 50m freestyle, setting new personal bests in both.

Lucia and Emma were competing for Lincolnshire for the first time. Both swam new personal bests in the 10-year-old age group, Lucia in the 50m backstroke where she came fifth and Emma in the 50m breaststroke, also in fifth place.

Deepings Swimming Club head coach Lynn Chapman said: “Alex, Lucia and Emma should be congratulated on their selection for Lincolnshire and for their great contribution to the team.”

Over the same weekend, Deepings Swimming Club competed in round five of the Junior Fenland League, hosted by Thetford.

The team finished in fourth place, which qualifies them for the B Final on October 20.

A smaller-than-usual squad of 15 put in maximum effort over the 45 races. Five swimmers won their age-group events: Pippa Everton in the 50m butterfly, Ed Trofimovas (50m breaststroke), Grace Edwards (50m backstroke), Maya Sangiorgio (25m butterfly) and Lola Fletcher (50m freestyle).

Pippa also finished second in the 50m backstroke in a new personal best, while Lola PB’ed in 50m backstroke and butterfly and Grace knocked two seconds of her 50m butterfly best and added a second PB in the 50m breaststroke to cap an outstanding evening.

Lynn Chapman said: “I’m excited about the season ahead. Our swimmers have come back to training after the summer break fit and keen to do well. If they keep up their hard work and focus on their core skills, they’ll put in some excellent performances and achieve their goals.”
