A trio of Masters swimmers travelled to Nottingham in March to represent Deepings Swimming Club at the Calverton & Bingham Swimming Club 9th Annual Masters Open Meet.

Tony Baskeyfield, Kerys Arundell and Paul Smith-Shelton competed in 14 races and finished in the top three an incredible 12 times, with one first, eight second and three third place finishes.

Tony and Kerys also stepped onto the podium in the age group top male and female competition, with Tony claiming silver in the 65-69 category and Kerys taking bronze in the 35-39 age group. Paul narrowly missed making it a hattrick, finishing in fourth place in the 50-54 group.

The three swimmers, now training with Deepings at Stamford Endowed Schools, also combined to achieve four personal bests times.

Tony never finished outside of the top three in his six events. He won the 100m backstroke, took second place in the 50m backstroke, 100 individual medley and 50m butterfly and touched home third in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle.

Kerys, recently returning after surgery for an ankle injury, had three second-place finishes, in the 100m backstroke with a new personal best of 1:37.00, 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

Paul’s best results came in his preferred breaststroke, where he finished second in the 50m and 100m events, the former in a new best time of 38.59.

He also came third in the 50m freestyle, sixth in the 100m freestyle with a new PB of 1:12.12, and eighth in the 50m butterfly.

Deepings Swimming Club head coach Lynn Chapman said: “The Masters don’t get to compete very often, but they made the most of their opportunity at the Calverton & Bingham meet with some excellent performances. They have been working hard in training and fully deserved their success.”
