An up-and-coming squad of younger swimmers represented Deepings Swimming Club at the Fenland Open Meet and swam away with an impressive 21 medals.

Hosted by March Marlins at Whittlesey, the event saw swimmers up to the age of 11 compete in 50m races and those 12/over compete in 100m races, with everyone having the chance to contest the 100m individual medley (100IM).

Nine-year-old Ashton Hunter continued his impressive streak during 2022 by winning medals in all five of his races. He chalked up Deepings only gold medal of the day by triumphing in the 50m backstroke and added a quartet of silvers in the 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly as well as the 100IM.

Joining Ashton on the podium was James Cash, who bagged four medals from his five events. James, competing in the 11yrs age group, took a pair of silvers in the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly plus bronze in the 50m backstroke and 100IM.

Six girls came away with medals. The youngest, Olivia Laud, won bronze in the 100IM 9yrs age group while, at the other end of the age scale, Kendra Greenwood-Covell took four bronze medals in the 14yrs 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 100IM.

Lucy Jenkinson won bronze in the 10yrs 50m backstroke, while silver medal performances came from the rapidly improving Eydee Chilvers in the 11yrs 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle and promising youngster Mieke McDonald in the 12yrs 100m butterfly.

Mieke also finished third in the 100m breaststroke and was narrowly outside the medals in her other races.

Completing the medal tally was Isobel Vause who collected silver in the 13yrs 100IM and bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club head coach, said: “This was a relatively inexperienced squad of swimmers, but they all performed strongly across all the strokes. I was delighted to see so many of them enter all the events and do themselves justice – their hard work in training is really paying off.”
