Eleven Deepings swimmers competed at Rotherham Metro’s Premier level one meet held at Ponds Forge. This competition draws many of the country’s top swimmers - including a large contingent of swimmers from the prestigious Loughborough University Swimming Club. Despite the high standard, many Deepings swimmers gained new long course personal best times and two of our swimmers Marcus Cook and Laura Swain brought home awards for finishing in the top three in their age groups.

The gala got off to an excellent start with fourteen year old Marcus Cook leading the way with an impressive start in the first event, the boys the 50m Backstroke, where he not only finished third but also bagged himself a new long course county record. For a second year I have to report that Marcus is desperately trying to get back to full fitness (after a bout of illness and injury) in time for the Midlands championships next month. Over the weekend he swam eight events producing seven new long course PBs. Marcus won the 50m Butterfly in his age group in true magnificent form & set a new Deepings age group club record. He also picked up a second award in the heats of the 50m Breaststroke - where he produced a superb time of 35.10 which is another new club record and a new county long course record. Marcus appears to be getting stronger by the week; he now has success at two open meets under his belt, so things are looking good. We wish him well at the Midlands!

“Anything Marcus can do I can match” - must be 16 year old Oliver Perkins motto! Both boys swam exceptionally well in the 100m Freestyle and recorded the exact same time: 1.00.07. I only wish I was a betting person – what odds could you get on two lads in different age groups achieving the exact same time? Overall Oliver competed in four events and he’s gone from strength to strength. His progress over the year has been tremendous, as his times and rankings in this gala demonstrate. Last year he was well down the rankings in seven events; this year he finished in the top 6 in three out of his four events. I’m sure he will dip under that one minute barrier next time long course. Well Done!

Laura Swain swam in two events and once again produced outstanding performances. In a very competitive 50m Breaststroke race she managed to take 2nd place and the silver award and gain herself a New County Long Course Record too! This set the tone for the rest of the weekend, as in the 100m Freestyle Laura swam to a well deserved 6th place which also gave her a personal best time of 1.04.34.

The 13 & 14 years categories were perhaps one of the strongest of all and it was good to see our all our swimmers in these age groups being rewarded for their efforts by producing PBs. 14 year olds Callum Clark & Emma Watts both seems to be steadily growing in confidence. Callum put together very good swims in both his 200m & 400m freestyle events. Callum has only ever swam the 200m Freestyle long course twice before (both in the Netherlands). The 400m Freestyle was his first ever attempt long course so it was superb effort that he PBd in both his events.

Emma’s had quite a lot of success recently, steadily bringing down her short course times; so it was lovely to see her name turn up at Sheffield and to know that she has turned her attentions to swimming her events long course. Her first outing was in the two sprint events the 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle where she produced two excellent long course PBs. She went on to attempt the 200m Freestyle once again producing an excellent long course PB.

13 year old Kelda McKnight had a very busy schedule but continued her excellent form throughout. She produced six excellent long course PBs, two of which when converted also gave her two more. She gave an outstanding performance in her 400m IM where she got off to a superb start setting 50m & 100m Fly PBs. In the 200m IM she got off to a blistering start setting yet another 50m Fly PB. In total she also achieved three Long Course County Records (all subject to ratification) - an outstanding performance!

Elisha Penman as always swam well, producing three long course PBs in her three events - giving her a hat trick... well done!

Twelve year olds Alex Wray and Ben Woolf continued to show their potential with some outstanding swims. Alex got off to a blistering start in the 200 IM setting a new long course PB and Long Course County Record in the 50m fly leg, before finishing the event in 12th place in a personal best time, which also turned out to be a new Long Course County Record (both subject to ratification). He also produced a gutsy swim in the heats of the 100m Freestyle where he set an excellent personal best time to finish in 7th place and set his third County Long Course Record (also subject to ratification). He had a superb swim in the 200m Breaststroke setting three long course PBs at 50m, 100m and 200m all of which are also new County Long Course Records (subject to ratification).... Finally Alex tackled the 400m Freestyle where he managed to set yet another new long course PB to finish in 9th place. An outstanding weekend!

Ben Woolf swimming at this meet for the first time competed well. He set an excellent time in the boys 50m Butterfly dipping under 36 seconds for the very first time when converted to take 6th place and a New Long Course County Record. He also had a good swim in the boys 100m backstroke where he produced a new long course PB which give him his second County Record!

Deepings talented 10 year old William Swain showed his all-round potential by swimming four events and producing five personal best times. All of which were County Long Course Records (subject to ratification)! He excelled in his two sprint events the 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle where he finished 8th in both, and gave him not only long course PB but also converted ones too. A job well done!

Niamh Warrington gave an outstanding performer in the Girls 9 year’s old age group for Deeping taking 5th place in both the 50m & 200m Freestyle. In her 50m event she took almost a second of her current time which also gave her a first Long Course County Record (subject to ratification)! She also decided to tackling the 200m Freestyle for the very first time long course which not only gave her a new PB but her second County Long Course Record (subject to ratification). We hope to see her at next year’s Midland Championships – keep up the good work!

Lastly with the recent introduction of the new long course records by the Lincolnshire’s ASA executive it also meant our swimmers had the opportunity to clinch new County Records for themselves as it stands at the moment 9 year old

Niamh Warrington (1), 12 year old Alex Wray (4) & Ben Woolf (2), 10 year old William Swain (5), 13 year old Kelda McKnight (3), 14 years old Marcus Cook (3) & 15 year old Laura Swain (1) all have claim form being submitted for ratification.

Well Done Swimmers!
