Deepings swimmers were at the ASA East Midland Championships over the course of May in Sheffield, Corby and Braunstone and what an action-packed month of racing it was! Our swimmers return with a host of medals, personal triumphs, National qualifying times and Club records.

Our swimmers put in a great performance at the end of the year, at the Lincolnshire County Championships. The squad was hoping to build on that successful and deliver another tremendous performance here, which they have. These results will act as a launch pad to further success at the nationals in August.

First up were the East Midland Region Long Course Championships in Sheffield...

Congratulations to our record holders:-  Isabel Spinley 200m Butterfly x 2 , 50m Butterfly X 2, Alex Wray 50m  & 100m Butterfly, Bailie Harrison 100m Butterfly X 2 and Holly Leggott 50m Freestyle.

Our age group winners were: - Bailie Harrison, Isabel Spinley, & Alex Wray

Holly Leggott swam brilliantly in the 50m Freestyle here in Sheffield to claim a New 50m Freestyle Club Record (28.90)

Two swimmers Chloe Jones and Alexandra Cooper were brave enough to tackle the 800m long course for the first time at these championships, both girls swan remarkably well.

Thomas Neal had a great championships he scored a full house in the Backstroke events he making all three finals. Sadly he just missed a medal in the 50m Backstroke when he was touched into 4th place. He also went on to make the final of the 50m Fly, 50m & 100m Freestyle. His results were as follows 50m Bk 4th, 100m Bk 5th, 200m Bk 5th, 50m Fly 7th, 50m F/C 10th, and 100m F/C 7th - Congratulations

Also Congratulations to Emily McCann (200m F/C 9th), Emily Catherall (200m Br 9th), Benjamin Beedell (50m Fly 6th, 200m Fly 4th), Kallum Penman 200m (Fly 6th), Louis Metselaar (50m Br 6th) Jessie Spooner (100m Bk 10th) who all made finals - this is a great achievement - Well Done!

Isabel took gold in the 50m & 200m Butterfly, she swam them both in style here in Sheffield. Both times were new club records! She also took silver in the 100m Butterfly which was also a national qualifying time. Congratulations!

Bailie took gold and set a new personal best time’s in 100m fly (1.02.9) which took Isabel club record off her. Bailie had already broken the record in the heats. She went on to take the silver in the 50m fly. Brilliant news!

Chloe Jones swam a magnificent race in the 800m Freestyle. Swimming this event for the very first time long course finished 3rd giving her first Midland Bronze Medal.

Alex Wray continues to go from strength to strength after his success in the British Championships in Glasgow. Here in Sheffield despite finishing 2nd in the final of the 100m Butterfly his time of 57.38 and his 50m split time of 26.12 were both New Lincs County Long Course Records and New Club Records.  Although he won the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle he couldn’t improve on his times he did at the British Championships in Glasgow. Alex Wray swam at the British Championships in Glasgow. Congratulations!

But I’m pleased to announce he has been picked to represent his Country in Hungary at the European Junior Championships this summer on the 6th to 10th July 2016.  A team of 26 junior swimmers will be travelling to Hodmezovasarhely in Hungary in the hope they can push for their own Olympic selection in Tokyo in four years’ time. This is a great opportunity for Alex to shine even more than he has been doing just lately. The European Junior Championships are a key development opportunity for young British athletes as we wish Alex well at those championships. We at Deepings Swimming Club are very proud of his achievements and wish him well as he continues his journey to Tokyo.

Next up was the East Midlands Inclusive Disability Meet in Braunstone...

We just had 11 year old Miki Lin-Gao representing Deepings club swimmers at the recent East Midland Disability Meet 2016 at Braunstone

She swam very well at this competition she produced with a huge PB in her 200m Freestyle taking over 11 seconds off her current time. She is currently ranked 2nd on the British Junior Age Group Rankings for category S8. During the day she also PB’d in her 50m Breaststroke where she is currently ranked 3rdin category SB6. She swam four events in total and was never out of the top 3 placings, which is an excellent achievement.

Finally came the East Midland District Age Group Championships in Corby...

Over the weekend of the 28th& 29th May 2016 Corby’s International swimming pool hosted the East Midlands Regional Swimming Championships and a team of Deepings swimmers are preparing to do battle. Joseph Lund, Bethany Eagle-Brown, Katie Rundle, Jemma Housego all qualified for these Championships.

Club coach Lynn Chapman and her team have done an excellent job preparing our swimmers for these Championships.  Last year Deepings Swimming Club only had two swimmers qualify for this competition Tom Adams & Ben Beedell. This year four of our young swimmers competed at these Championships, they producing some excellent swims over the weekend.

Two of our swimmers Bethany Eagle-Brown (50m Br, 100m & 200m F/C, 50m Fly) & Katie Rundle ( 100m &200m Fly) both reached finals and Katie went on to  medal in the 200m Butterfly by finishing in 3rd in a time of 2.45.28, which is an outstanding achievement. Bethany almost medalled but was sadly touched into 4thplace in the 200m Freestyle but nevertheless an outstanding performance from both girls.

Congratulations to Joseph Lund who swam 6 events and to Jemma Housego who swam two, it is a great achievement simply to reach this standard of competition.

Well done to all of the swimmers, the club is very proud of you!
