BRONZE MEDAL & A NATIONAL TIME FOR LAUREN WRAY AT THE MIDLANDS!
TOM LANE MAKES THREE FINALS AND WAS PIPPED AT THE POST FOR BRONZE MEDAL!
DANIEL LUFF STEPS UP TO SENIOR LEVEL FOR THE FIRST TIME!
1 National Time, 2 Bronze Medals & 8 New Long Course PBs
This years Midlands Youth championships took place over the weekend of 2nd/3rd of May and Deepings three swimmers had some great swims.
Lauren Wray had to wait until the very last event of the championships to compete in the event that took her to the Nationals last year. If you remember Lauren finished 2nd at the Counties in February and was well inside the national qualifying time but sadly it wasn’t long course. Here she wanted to show what fantastic form she was in and come home with that national time again. She didn’t disappoint at 400m. She was just one second down on the time she achieved at Counties and everything was looking good. She kept her cool and stayed focused on the job in hand, at the final turn she was still well within the national standard and managed to touch in third place and gain a bronze medal for her efforts! During the course of the weekend she had also qualified for four other events, two of which she managed to produce two long course PBs. Congratulations I’m sure it was celebrations all-round!
Tom Lane was a very busy boy at the weekend. He competed in twelve events over the two days. He performed incredibly well making the final in both the 50m Butterfly & Backstroke events. He finished 9th in the 100m Breaststroke which made him first reserve, and it was a waiting game to see whether any swimmer was to pull out of the final. Luckily someone did and Tom stepped to the challenge, he swam well to finish in 7th place in the final. Over the two days he set new long course PBs in no fewer than five events and had an incredible swim in the 100m Freestyle going faster then ever before. In the heats of the 50m backstroke he finished in 3rd place but in the final he was just pipped at the post for that bronze medal - unlucky! All in all he had an excellent championship - our congratulations on your achievements.
Daniel Luff, didn’t seemed put off by the prospect of swimming against senior swimmers in his first ever Youth Championships. He stepped up to the challenge and put in some excellent performances. Although he did not achieve any long course PBs on this occasion his times were very good and he came very close on a couple of occasions. Congratulations it’s a great achievement to make it to such a high level of the sport
Sam Dalton after performing well at the Counties in the 50m Fly event Sam decided it was worth making the trip to Royal Leamington Spa to compete at this years Midland Masters event were she performed extremely well - swimming faster than the time she produced at Counties despite being given the news that a close friend who would have been that the championships had died that morning. A glutton for punishment and somewhat unprepared she decided to tackle the 200m Fly, and although well off her current PB she was good enough to win a bronze medal and gain herself a new masters county record - which put a smile on her face!
Chris Barrett and Lauren Wray both attended the East Midlands Distance Time Trials at Loughborough on Sunday despite giving a solid performance they were unable to improve on their current PBs on this occasion.
Congratulations swimmers, first on qualifying for the Midlands Championships - and on your achievements!
