Four Deepings Swimmers Compete at the Midlands, Three For The Very First Time!

Achievements - 2 Long Course PBs

This weekend saw four Deepings swimmers in action at the Midland District BAGCAT Championships; three of them for the very first time - and I’m pleased to report that they all performed well. It is a great achievement simply to reach this standard of competition, and a bonus to perform well at Coventry - not generally regarded as a ‘fast’ pool.

Marcus Cook
Clearly it’s been a difficult year for Marcus as he has battled with illness and injury for a second year - making training and getting fit in time for the Midlands tough. He’s been determined not let all this get the better of him!  At Coventry on Saturday he started well in his opening event, the 200m Backstroke, despite a good positive swim he had to settle for 11th place. Although he gave three gutsy performances, Coventry’s 50m pool seem to highlight his lack of fitness which showed in his 200m event times. His gritty determination to do well  came out in his 100m Butterfly event where he gave an strong performance to finish 10th place, setting a time just outside his personal best, which was excellent news and a good start to the championships. We’ll see what next week brings as he would have had another week of training under his belt!

Alex Wray
Our congratulation to Alex on qualifying for the Midlands for the first time!  He gave an outstanding performance at Peterborough’s Open Meet in April to qualify for these championships. He wasn’t overawed by the occasion despite competing against some tough competition; he swam well and produced an excellent long course PB in his 200m IM event.

Jordan Bull
Our youngest swimmer competing over the weekend was Jordan, 11years old.  He first qualified to swim 200m Breaststroke at the County Championships earlier this year which also made him eligible to swim for the 100m event too.  Competition is tough at this level and so too are those qualifying times!  It is therefore remarkable that Jordan was attempting to swim his first ever 100m Breaststroke long course at Coventry. He swam well to produce an excellent long course PB. We wish him well in his 200m Breaststroke event next weekend.

Kelda McKnight
Was our only girl swimmer to compete at the weekend and it was her first time at the Midland Championships too, she swam extremely well. Kelda has been improving all year and its lovely to see her hard work and determination to success is paying off. Swimming the 200m Backstroke long course for only the second time put in a good strong performance but was just outside the time she produced at Sheffield last month but Coventry is renowned for being a slow pool so she had done remarkable well.

Our thanks to Lynn Chapman our club coach for all her hard work in preparing these swimmers for these Championships. In total six swimmers have now competed at the Midland Championships this year and we have two swimmers so far going to the Nationals this summer.

Once again - congratulations swimmers - and all the best for next weekend!!
