Inter County Division 2 - Ponds Forge International Sports Centre (25m) Sheffield, 18th October 2009
Whilst the rest of the club were competing at our open meet two swimmers from Deepings had been selected to represent the County at this year’s National Inter County Championships. It’s not every day you get selected for such an important and prestigious event, but Laura Colledge and Marcus Cook were asked to compete not only in the relay squads but also in individual events too, what an honour!
Division 1 & 2 were competing at the same time, Lincolnshire were in division 2 and hoping to get promoted to division1. You do this by finishing in the top four places. The teams were competing in Sheffield’s Ponds Forge International pool. The inspiration for this competition came from swimmers Ross Davenport and David Carry who both represented GB at the Olympics and were hosted the day’s events and were on poolside during the competition.
Lincolnshire team produced a number of fantastic swims during the day including our own Marcus Cook. He had been selected to swim two individual events and the medley relay. In his first event the 100m Freestyle he swam extraordinarily well, smashing his personal best time and dipping under one minute by three seconds. You have to ask ‘where did that swim come from’ - we always knew he had it in him but what a time to do it, fantastic stuff!
He posted a time of 57.56 which was a new club record, CQT & PB and to think he withdrew from the Lincoln Vulcan’s open meet as he was suffering from a sore throat and cold.
The day just got even better for Marcus as he set yet another excellent time in the heats of the 100m Backstroke where he produced yet another two second PB to finish in third place and set yet another New Club Record, CQT and personal best time.
The Lincolnshire team continued to put in some brilliant performances including taking victory in the Men’s 12/13yrs 200m Medley Relay which was led off by Marcus. He made a terrific start for the team and posted his fastest ever 50m backstroke of 30.95! He set a new personal best time, a new county qualifying time and a new club record, What a day he had!
Laura had the honour of representing the County in the senior age group the 16/17 category where she swam the 100m Freestyle. She got off to a good start and was holding her own against very talented swimmers and being the competitor she is she was not going to give up. She did extremely well for the team and posted her second fastest freestyle time of the year to gain her CQT. She had also been picked to lead off the girl’s medley relay team; she too got the team off to a good start and posted a time just outside her PB.
Both our swimmers did tremendously well and were both an asset to the County Team which finished in 7th place with 386 points, Hampshire won the event with 483 points. Our congratulations on your selection and your success!
