Deepings Swimming Club - Final Round Up of 2008 County Championships:
First can I say congratulations to everyone that qualified for the championships, which is an achievement in it’s self. This year there has been a lot of illness around and I know that it is the first time Sam has ever missed the County Championships through illness, so if you have managed to stay fit and well during the championships well done!
There were eight galas in total, Deepings swimmers have swam exceptionally well in all of them produced some first-rate results. In the past Deepings has had a history of National Qualifiers, some of which have gone on to win medals and although no national times were achieved at these championship, we do have a few swimmers that are very close to qualifying.
This is a round up of what our swimmers achieved:-

Approximately 48 Deepings Swimmers qualified and entered this years Counties (not all competed due to illness or other commitments etc.)
Chris Pithey has had a fantastic championships by officially becomes the clubs fastest boys 50m Freestyle swimmer. On Saturday he had a magnificent 50m fly swim, which shows that he is in great shape and is swimming faster than he has ever done before. With every swim he moves ever closer to achieving his goal. Chris swam this event long course last month for his university and narrowly missed the British Championships Qualifying Time! The time he produced to become Lincs County Champion converts to a time of 27.15 which is only 0.07 off that tough qualifying time. If he wants to swim at the British Championships in July he has to turn his attention to swimming long course events now. The last time we had a swimmer qualify for a British Championship event was my own daughter Jenny who qualified for the British Commonwealth games trials. So it’s exciting for me let alone our coach to think that Chris could well be the next Deepings swimmer to qualify for such a competition in an Olympic year, fingers crossed Chris!
Marcus Cook has only been back competing since the end of January, after breaking his wrist, had an amazing championships, he achieved no fewer than 10 MQTs & 15 PBs. He probably never dreamt that these championships would do this well. Marcus take heart the chairman’s son Karl was always breaking or injuring something around championship events and he managed to win a bronze medal in the Breaststroke at Nationals! Congratulations on your achievements!
Tom Lane representing Deepings for the very first time at the Counties had an exceptional Championship by winning Three Age Group Titles the 200m Breaststroke, 400m I.M and 100m I.M. events. He had an outstanding swim in the 100m Breaststroke he went below 14 seconds for the very first time to make the championship final. In the final he managed to set another personal best time and achieve a MQT. In total during the competitions he has set 9 MQTs and 7 PBs. Well Done!
Connie Stygall did the double by winning the 13 yrs Age Group 50m & 100m Breaststroke. She had an excellent swim in the heats of the 100m Breaststroke swimming which was very close her personal best time to make the final where she finished in 4th place. During last weeks championships she set a new County records and achieved her first MQT of 2008 in the 50m Breaststroke event. Congratulations!
Jenny Arthur achieved a hat trick by winning all the long distance events 1500m, 800m & 400m Freestyle in her age group. She had an excellent set of top 6 placed during the championships (1st x 3, 2nd x 2, 3rd x 4, 5th x 3 & a 6th place).
Lauren Wray produced a terrific set of results; in the 12 year old age group she won the 50m &100m Freestyle event. I also understand she had an outstanding skins competition see results at the end of this report. She achieved 4 MQTs in the 1500m, 800m, 400m and 100m Freestyle. She went on to set 9 personal best times for herself; she now has a few NQT in her sights. Congratulations.
Daniel Luff set a personal best time & a MQT in the 100m Butterfly to make the final where his finished in forth place. He had an excellent swim in the 50m Freestyle to finish in 2nd place and gain a new PB & Midland Qualifying Time. He is only one second away from a NQT in the 50m Freestyle. Congratulations!
Dom Gray had also had a successful championships he made three finals 100m F/C, 100m IM and 100m Fly. He was never out of the top three placings in each event he swam. He achieved two MQTs in the 50m Fly and 100m Freestyle events and produced an excellent PB in the 100m IM. Congratulations!
Adam Brooker back swimming for Deepings (shown on the results as SL) swam extremely well producing 11 PBs and 1 MQT in the 50m Freestyle event. He had an excellent swim in the 100m Freestyle were he almost went under a minute for the first time and to achieve a MQT, hopefully next time. Well done on your achievements!
It was also nice to see Kieran Gabbitus’ name back on the results sheets and doing so well. He is a very talented swimmer but had to have a couple of year out of the water due to illness, I’m pleased he is back. Kieran produced some excellent swims, in fact he has achieved 7 new PBs at these championships and I hope that this is just the start. Congratulation!
Angelina Lim (1st time for Deepings) had a fine championship too; starting off the competition by winning the 200m IM in her age group. Last week she achieved a New County Record in the 50m Breaststroke in her age group (16 yrs). In total she achieved 5 Age Group Titles ( 100m Fly, 100m & 200m IM, 200m F/C & 50m Br) and 1 Championship Title in the 50m Breaststroke, 2 MQTs and 2 PBs. Congratulations!
Laura Ballaam (1st time for Deepings) had a brilliant championships she won the Open and Age Group event in the 50m Fly. In 13 years age group she took the 200m Fly title and was second in the open age group. She made the final of the 100m Fly after winning her age group and went on to finish 2nd in the Championship event. She achieved 6 MQTs (100m, 200m Fly, 100m, 200m, 400m F/C, 200m IM) and set 12 personal best times. Congratulations!
Thomas Ballaam ( also new to the club) also had a successful championships he won 5 Age Group Titles - 100m & 200m IM, 50m & 200m Breaststroke and 50m Fly. He achieved 6 personal best times and came very close to achieving a MQT in the 200m IM. We hope he is enjoying his time with us and we wish him lots of success with us in the future Congratulations
It’s unfortunate for Chris Barrett that his birthday is on the 11th March, which means he is always one of the youngest swimmers in his category. On saying that he has done extremely well this, last year I believe he achieved MQT in just two events (100m & 200m Fly) but this year he has excelled himself by achieved 5 MQT in the200m, 400m & 800m F/C & the 200m & 100m Fly events. He set 11 new personal best times too. Congratulations.
This was Chiara Leadbeater’s second time at the Counties and she had a marvellous competition setting 5 midland qualifying times - 100m & 200m Breast, 100m & 200m Bk and 400m IM. I believe she has achieved 9 new PBs and in at least one case by a huge margin. In the 200m Breaststroke she managed to produce a 3 for 1 (3PBs for 1 swim) she PB’d at 50m, 100m and 200m smashed her currents time by over 11 seconds, an incredible achievement! Congratulations!
It was 11 year old Elisha Penman’s first time at the County Championships and she swam remarkably well. Elisha first swam the 800m & 1500m at our Club Champs back in September where she qualified to swim these events at Counties. It fantastic that she achieved two outstanding swims to qualify for the Midland Championships at her first attempt. She narrowly missing achieved her 3rd MQT in the 200m Freestyle event by just 0.14 of a second. During the championships Elisha achieved 6 more PBs. Congratulations!
Everyone swam well and achieved so much at these championships so it is hard for me to mention everyone’s achievement.
I’m pleased to report that almost every swimmer has improved significantly on last year’s results - either in terms of times achieved or position in their age group.
Other swimmers not yet mentioned but achieved lots of PBs are: -
Shannon Ruff (12 PBs), Samara McKnight (11 PBs), Emma Catterall (11PBs), Laura Colledge (8PBs), Charlotte Stygall (7 PBs), Grace Lamsdale (7 PBs), Alex Wray (6PBs), Alec Lamsdale (4PBs), Callum Clark (5PBs), Jordan Templer (6PBs), Adam Bolster (5PBs) & Oliver Perkins (6PBs) - If I have missed yours I’m sorry.
Our congratulations to all who competed and to our Coach Lynn Chapman and all her assistants! The results show a marked improvement on last year’s results in all the key areas. I believe everyone deserves a pat on the back! Hopefully this is only the start of things to come! Our thanks also to everyone that supported our swimmers and to those officials that worked on poolside, with out them the event can’t go ahead.
